The characteristics of hot-rolled H-beams and welded H-beams are different
2026-03-24 22:17:10

Hot-rolled H-beams and Welded H-Beams differ in their characteristics, as detailed below:
Hot-rolled H-beams
1.Wide specification range: The height, web thickness, flange thickness and flange width can be tailored by welding suitable steel plates according to customer requirements. In addition to standard sizes, various non-standard dimensions can be fabricated as needed.
2.Limited steel grade options: The primary steel grades for hot-rolled H-beams are Q235B and Q345B. Manufacturers may not be able to fulfill orders for small batches of special steel grades, whereas the welding process allows for flexible selection of steel plates to meet such demands.
3.High product precision and excellent surface quality: The use of high-precision, high-quality steel plates ensures the same superior precision and surface finish of the finished products, giving hot-rolled H-beams a smoother and more aesthetic appearance.
4.Stable performance and sound internal structure: The production of hot-rolled H-beams demands stringent standards for smelting, continuous casting and rolling processes, as well as advanced equipment capacity, control systems and testing methods. This results in reliable and stable internal structure, chemical composition, and all performance indicators (mechanical properties, process properties, etc.).
Welded H-beams
1.Wide specification range: Similar to hot-rolled H-beams, the cross-sectional dimensions of welded H-beams can be customized and fabricated to customer requirements, adapting to various non-standard sizes.
2.Lower material and labor loss: Compared with hot-rolled H-beams, welded H-beams involve less material and labor consumption, enabling better reduction in raw material and energy waste.
3.Distinct product characteristics: Welded H-beams offer excellent pressure resistance and high load-bearing capacity, yet it is difficult to ensure uniform performance of the products, and their dimensional specifications are subject to certain limitations.
4.Prone to welding defects: Despite its many advantages, the welding forming process leads to residual thermal stress in the weld zone, as well as structural stress caused by microstructural differences in the welded area, making the products susceptible to welding defects.
Hot-rolled H-beams and welded H-beams also differ in the following aspects:
1.Processing technology: Hot-rolled H-beams are formed by rolling mills, while welded H-beams are manufactured by welding the flanges and web together on a continuous welding unit.
2.Raw material and labor consumption: Hot-rolled H-beams consume fewer raw materials, contributing to greater savings in energy and labor costs, whereas welded H-beams involve higher material and labor consumption.
3.Product characteristics: Welded H-beams have inconsistent product performance and limited dimensional specifications, but feature good pressure resistance and high load-bearing capacity; hot-rolled H-beams boast high structural stability, making them suitable for constructing buildings in seismic zones.
4.Specifications and steel grade options: Welded H-beams cover a wider range of specifications (cross-sectional dimensions) and can be welded with customized steel plates according to customer needs, with a more diverse selection of steel grades. By contrast, hot-rolled H-beams have relatively fixed specifications and a limited range of steel grade options.
5.Product precision and internal structure: Welded H-beams achieve high precision and excellent surface quality thanks to the high-quality steel plates used in the welding process. In addition, the production of welded H-beams requires high standards for smelting, continuous casting, rolling and other processes, as well as advanced equipment capacity, control systems and testing methods, which ensures the reliability and stability of their internal structure, chemical composition and all performance indicators (mechanical properties, process properties, etc.).
In summary, hot-rolled H-beams and welded H-beams exhibit significant differences in processing technology, raw material and labor consumption, product characteristics, specifications and steel grade options, as well as product precision and internal structure. The specific type of H-beam to be adopted should be selected based on the actual application scenarios and project requirements.
